A few years ago I was inspired by a story that Oprah Winfrey covered called the Last Lecture. She brought to her show a professor named Randy Pausch from Carnegie Mellon who had delivered his "last lecture". This was an academic tradition at Carnegie Mellon, where hypothetically, if you knew you were going to die and had one last lecture, what would it be? In his case it was true. He was dying of pancreatic cancer. HERE is the link to the youtube video.
Part of the video talks about letting your kids make their rooms into whatever they want it to be. He sited the example of how his parents let him paint random objects on his wall.
So, I usually let my kids be as creative as they want to be with their rooms. Here are Ashlyn's benderoo creations that she plastered all over her wall, along with a picture she colored of her favorite animal-a dog.
